Study on Structural Timber Alternative for Building Performed Using Traditional Systems
This thesis discusses the structural design process and its possible impacts on the utilization of timber-based structural systems shown on a real project of a residential building performed using traditional systems (reinforced concrete structure with grid slabs and ceramic walls).
The structural design was performed using the Dlubal program RFEM. The design process had the following phases:
A) Modeling of the entire structure, including loads.
B) Horizontal and vertical CLT element (panels) design by using the RF‑LAMINATE add-on module.
C) Horizontal steel element (beams) design by using the RF‑STEEL add-on module.
D) Horizontal laminated timber element (beams) design by using the RF‑TIMBER Pro add-on module.
E) Vertical CLT element (panels) design by using the RF‑LAMINATE add-on module.
F) Vertical steel element (columns) design by using the RF‑STEEL add-on module.
G) Vertical laminated timber element (columns) design by using the RF‑TIMBER Pro add-on module.
H) Fire resistance design of the laminated timber elements by using the RF‑TIMBER Pro add-on module.
I) Reduced section design of CLT elements and verification using the RF‑LAMINATE add-on module.
J) Seismic design of the entire structure.

In this article, the calculation of a timber panel wall with the beam panel thickness type is compared with a manual calculation.
Using the Timber Design add-on, timber column design is possible according to the 2018 NDS standard ASD method. Accurately calculating timber member compressive capacity and adjustment factors is important for safety considerations and design. The following article will verify the maximum critical buckling strength calculated by the Timber Design add-on using step-by-step analytical equations as per the NDS 2018 standard including the compressive adjustment factors, adjusted compressive design value, and final design ratio.
The three types of moment frames (Ordinary, Intermediate, Special) are available in the Steel Design add-on of RFEM 6. The seismic design result according to AISC 341-22 is categorized into two sections: member requirements and connection requirements.
To evaluate whether it is also necessary to consider the second-order analysis in a dynamic calculation, the sensitivity coefficient of interstory drift θ is provided in EN 1998‑1, Sections 2.2.2 and 4.4.2.2. It can be calculated and analyzed using RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9.
When generating shear walls and deep beams, you can assign not only surfaces and cells, but also members.
In RFEM, the oriented strand board (OSB) material is available for the USA and Canada. The material parameters are taken from the "Panel Design Specification manual".
In the ultimate configuration of the steel joint design, you have the option to modify the limit plastic strain for welds.
The "Base Plate" component allows you to design base plate connections with cast-in anchors. In this case, plates, welds, anchorages, and steel-concrete interaction are analyzed.
